Whitefly Outbreaks in South Florida: New Pressure on Ficus Hedges

The rugose spiraling whitefly (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus) arrived in Miami-Dade around 2009 and has since become one of the most damaging ornamental pests in South Florida. The name comes from the distinctive spiral wax pattern the pest deposits on leaf undersides — a diagnostic characteristic visible without magnification. Infestations can defoliate mature Ficus hedges within two growing seasons and are now documented on over 90 host plant species throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.


Identification: Rugose Spiraling Whitefly vs. Other Species

South Florida hosts multiple whitefly species, and treatment strategy differs by species. Misidentification wastes money.

Rugose spiraling whitefly (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus):

Ficus whitefly (Singhiella simplex):

Silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia argentifolii):

If you see spiral wax on the leaves: That is rugose spiraling whitefly. Treatment strategy should target this species specifically.


Why Ficus Hedges Are Particularly Vulnerable

Ficus benjamina and related hedge species are already stressed in South Florida for multiple reasons:

When rugose spiraling whitefly is added to an already-stressed Ficus planting, decline accelerates. Sooty mold coating leaves reduces photosynthesis. Defoliation weakens the plant further. Successive infestations in 2–3 years can kill established Ficus hedges.

Pesticide applications must be made by a licensed Florida Pest Control operator for commercial and HOA applications. Homeowner applications of over-the-counter products are permitted for residential use within labeled guidelines. Prevention and Long-Term Management

The single most effective long-term strategy is replacing vulnerable Ficus hedges with resistant alternatives. If a hedge has been significantly defoliated multiple times, recovery is uncertain and repeated treatment costs exceed replacement cost over 5 years.

Resistant hedge alternatives to Ficus in South Florida:

For clients who want to maintain Ficus: Annual soil drench with imidacloprid in April–May, before the rainy season begins, provides season-long systemic protection. This is the most cost-effective maintenance schedule and prevents the catastrophic defoliation that triggers costly emergency treatments.
