Palm Tree Care in South Florida

South Florida's landscape identity is built on palms — from the Sabal palmetto and Washingtonia columns lining Coconut Grove's McFarlane Road to the Royal Palm avenues of Fisher Island and the dense Areca privacy screens of Boca Raton's HOA communities. And yet South Florida has some of the worst-maintained palms in the world.

The three most common causes of palm failure in South Florida are: (1) over-pruning that removes photosynthetically active fronds, (2) deficient nutrition programs that miss the critical potassium-magnesium-manganese combination, and (3) failure to identify Ganoderma butt rot before it's terminal. This guide addresses all three.


The Pruning Standard — 9-3 Rule

ISA-certified palm arborists follow what is informally called the "9-3 rule" for palm pruning: if the fronds of a palm were a clock face, only fronds from the 9 o'clock position downward should be considered for removal. Fronds from 9 to 3 (the upper half of the canopy) should never be removed unless they are dead or structurally damaged.

Palm Nutrition — The Three Critical Elements

The standard lawn fertilizer (20-5-10 or similar) is the wrong fertilizer for South Florida palms. Palms have completely different nutritional requirements from turf grasses.

The correct fertilizer for South Florida palms is 8-2-12-4Mg (8% nitrogen, 2% phosphate, 12% potassium, 4% magnesium) slow-release formulation with micronutrients. Never use lawn fertilizer on palms — the nitrogen-to-potassium ratio is wrong and chronic application creates the exact potassium deficiency pattern that kills palms over 3-5 years. Ganoderma Butt Rot — The Silent Killer

Ganoderma butt rot (Ganoderma zonatum) is a fatal fungal disease affecting South Florida palms. There is no treatment. There is no cure. Once a palm is infected, removal is the only option — and planting another palm in the same location will typically result in re-infection within a few years.

How to identify it: Look at the base of the palm trunk — specifically the bottom 3-4 feet. A shelf-like fungal structure (conk) on the trunk or at the base is the diagnostic sign. The conk may be white, tan, or reddish-brown. It emerges when the palm is terminally infected.

Lethal Bronzing Disease — 2026 Update

Lethal Bronzing Disease (LBD), caused by a phytoplasma spread by the planthopper Haplaxius crudus, continues to spread through South Florida's palm populations. As of 2026, LBD has been confirmed in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Collier, and Monroe counties.

Species at highest risk: Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera), Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), and Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) show the highest mortality rates. Bismarckia, Areca, and Washingtonia show some resistance.

Preventive treatment: Oxytetracycline HCl (OTC) injection into the palm trunk every 3-4 months can prevent LBD infection in high-value palms in known disease zones. This is a professional service requiring proper injection equipment.
