Lawn Fertilization in South Florida
South Florida's soil is fundamentally different from the rest of the country. Sandy, high-pH, often deficient in iron and magnesium, and subject to intense summer leaching — it requires a fertilization approach that generic lawn guides get completely wrong.
Add to that the Florida summer fertilizer blackout period, county-specific restrictions near waterways, and phosphorus rules driven by water quality requirements, and you have a fertilization calendar that requires real local knowledge to execute correctly.
The June 1 Blackout — The Rule Most Homeowners Don't Know
Florida's Fertilizer Law (FL Statute 403.9337) establishes a statewide seasonal fertilizer blackout period for nitrogen and phosphorus — June 1 through September 30 — in most South Florida counties. During this period, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers cannot be applied to lawns or landscape plants in most municipalities.
Why this exists: Summer rainfall in South Florida is intense (80+ inches annually in some years). Nitrogen and phosphorus applied during rainy season leaches into stormwater, canals, and ultimately into coastal waters and the Everglades — contributing to algae blooms that have caused significant ecological damage and beach closures in recent years.
Violations: Non-compliance results in code enforcement citations. Fines range from $100-$1,000+ per violation depending on municipality.
What IS permitted during blackout:
- Iron applications (iron sulfate, chelated iron) — not subject to blackout
- Slow-release potassium (helps grass survive summer heat)
- Micronutrient applications (magnesium, manganese, zinc)
- Organic fertilizers that meet the slow-release nitrogen definition

All nitrogen applications must use minimum 50% slow-release nitrogen to comply with Florida fertilizer restrictions near water bodies. Why Iron and Magnesium Matter More Than Nitrogen
South Florida's sandy, alkaline soils are chronically deficient in iron and magnesium — two nutrients that produce the green color homeowners and HOAs expect. The mistake most people make is adding nitrogen when they see a yellow lawn. Often the problem is iron deficiency, not nitrogen deficiency.
Iron deficiency symptoms: New growth is yellow between the veins but veins remain green (interveinal chlorosis). Affects new leaves first. Very common in Miami-Dade's limestone-influenced soils.
Magnesium deficiency symptoms: Older leaves yellow first (unlike iron). Common in leached sandy soils throughout South Florida.
Fix: Apply chelated iron (for alkaline soils, use EDTA or EDDHA chelates) or iron sulfate during non-blackout periods. For magnesium, Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) is inexpensive and effective at 2 tablespoons per gallon foliar spray.
The nitrogen trap: Applying nitrogen to an iron-deficient lawn forces rapid grass blade growth that outpaces the plant's iron uptake capacity — making the yellowing worse. Diagnose the problem before choosing the solution.
Phosphorus Restrictions Near South Florida Waterways
If your property borders a canal, pond, lake, river, or any water body — and in South Florida, this describes a very large percentage of properties — additional phosphorus restrictions apply.
Florida's Limitation:
- No fertilizer with phosphorus within 3 feet of any water body edge
- Within 10 feet: Phosphorus-free formulas only (look for 0 in the middle N-P-K number)
- Collier County and Monroe County have additional restrictions driven by Big Cypress Basin and Marine Sanctuary water quality requirements
Product tip: Many South Florida garden centers now stock 0-0-K potassium products and iron-only supplements specifically designed for waterway-adjacent application. Read labels carefully — "lawn fertilizer" does not automatically mean phosphorus is absent.
